The number of cars on Spanish roads during August sees a high influx of vehicles due to holiday travel. It is estimated that there are going to be between 10 and 15 million cars moving around  Spain with a holiday destination being their final stop. 

With this in mind there is always someone unfortunately that is going to either breakdown or  have an accident and this is when everyone turns to their Spanish insurance company to  request assistance and for this reason we are highlighting a few of the important points to bear  in mind as regards to the cover you have and are entitled to.

What does my travel insurance cover in Spain? 

• Always call the 24 Hrs assistance number should a breakdown or accident arise

• Cover is for all of Western Europe and from Km 0 

• They will take your car to the nearest garage of your choice or hold onto the vehicle  until you inform them where you want it taken. Don´t forget to let them know the  following day the details of the garage 

• If the car has broken down or had an accident over 100 Kms from your main address they will repatriate the car but it will come on a high loader and get brought back  within 10 days or once the high loader has a full load to complete a journey 

• Apart from the vehicle the assistance company is there to help the driver and  occupants and therefore hotels and taxis are covered but you have to request this  service when you call the assistance company 

• The will repatriate or pay for your onward journey should you not be able to use the vehicle. 

• Loss of keys. If you have a spare key at home and need it sending to you the cost of this  is covered. 

• Transport of luggage and personal belongings are taken care of 

• Transportation of pets 

• Interpreting expenses 

• If your vehicle goes off the road this is not classed as a breakdown but a rescue and an  ascertained sum insured is covered 

• Cover the expense of parts sent to a garage but not the spare parts themselves 

• Emergency health repatriation or transfer of injured and ill parties If an insured party  suffers from a sudden illness or is injured while travelling, the insurer will cover  transfer or repatriation to the most suitable hospital or to his/her home indicated in  the schedule, via the most appropriate mode of transport. In the first case, if the  insured subsequently needs to be transferred to another hospital or to his/her home,  the insurer will also cover transfer. 

• Medical, surgical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation expenses abroad; If, as a result of  a sudden illness or an accident which occurred and the insured requires medical,  surgical, pharmaceutical or hospital care, the insurer will assume the following costs: a.

 • Hospitalization costs 

• Medical and surgical expenses and fees 

• Expenses for medication prescribed by the medical team 

• Pharmaceuticals prescribed by a doctor Expenses are covered to a maximum of 6,000  euros. 

Important issues to keep in mind when traveling to Spain

During the summer months of July and August, the number of cars on Spanish roads increases  significantly due to holiday travel. It is estimated that between 10 and 15 million vehicles will  be on the move, with many heading to various holiday destinations. 

Unfortunately, this surge in traffic often leads to breakdowns or accidents, prompting drivers to  turn to their Spanish insurance companies for assistance. To help you navigate this situation,  here are some important points regarding your coverage:

Emergency Assistance: Always call the 24-hour assistance number in the event of a breakdown  or accident. 

Area covered: Your insurance covers all of Western Europe, starting from Km 0 

Towing Services: The assistance company will tow your car to the nearest garage of your choice  or hold it until in their pound until you specify where you want it taken. Remember to inform  them of the garage details the following day! 

Repatriation of your vehicle: If your car breaks down or is involved in an accident more than  100 kilometres from your primary address, it will be repatriated on a high loader within 10 days  or once the loader has a full load. 

Occupants: The assistance service also helps the driver and passengers, covering the costs of hotels and taxi expenses. Make sure to request this service when you call. 

Continuation of your journey: If you cannot use your vehicle, the insurer will cover your  repatriation or onward travel costs for both the driver and the occupants. 

Lost Keys: If you have a spare key at home and need it sent to you, the cost is covered. Transport of Belongings: The transport of luggage and personal belongings is included. Pets: Pets are also covered during transport. 

Interpreting Services: Expenses for interpreting services are included. 

Off-Road Incidents: If your vehicle goes off the road, it is classified as a rescue rather than a  breakdown, and a specified amount is covered so check your policy. 

Parts: The cost of sending parts to a garage is covered, but not the spare parts themselves. 

Emergency Health Services: If an insured party suffers a sudden illness or injury while  travelling, the insurer will cover transportation or repatriation to the most suitable hospital or  home, using the most appropriate mode of transport. If further transfers are needed these will  also be covered. 

Medical Expenses Abroad: If you require medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, or hospitalisation  care due to a sudden illness or accident while traveling, the insurer will cover:

Medical and surgical fees 

Expenses for prescribed medications 

Pharmaceuticals prescribed by a doctor 

Coverage is provided up to a maximum of 6,000 euros.
