Spain is on a fault line and is Seismically active as it sits on the boundary of two major tectonic plates: Eurasian Plate and the African Plate and as these two plates are slowly colliding, we are situated in an Earthquake zone.

To be covered for damages caused by earthquakes you must have a house insurance policy in place to be covered for earthquake damage.  Any damages caused due to an earthquake are covered by the Spanish Consortium and not the actual insurer itself.

When you take out the insurance a small surcharge is automatically included in the premium that you pay and this amount is automatically paid to the consortium and this then covers you for earthquake cover.

The damages covered include structural damage to the property including demolition and removal of debris also the contents would be covered as well as alternative accommodation.

Key facts to remember:

  • You must have a valid house insurance in place
  • Payment is made directly from the consortium to the insured
  • Sum insured on the policy is covered

It is absolutely essential to have house insurance in place and we can offer you the cover that you need.  Having no house insurance in Spain means that you are one earthquake away from losing everything!!
